Gamma 1960 – 1961
Charles Alan “Al” Grove, 69, of Pine Beach, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family, following a long courageous battle with cancer. Al was born Nov. 16, 1941 in Perth Amboy to the late Charles Grove and Caroline Duchak. He resided in Perth Amboy until moving to Pine Beach in 1965.
He attended Newark State College, now Kean University, where he would pledge and forever be a part of the Gamma Pledge Class of Sigma Beta Tau in 1960. He Graduated with a BS in mathematics in 1963. He would receive his MS degree from Jersey City State University.
His rewarding career as a mathematics teacher at Brick Township High School spanned the years from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. He also coached the girl’s softball and boy’s bowling varsity teams at Brick H.S. He served as advisor to the Boy’s Key Club and was very active in the Brick Township Education Association.
For many years, he was involved in the Beachwood/Pine Beach Little League and Soccer Associations. He loved summers at Ortley Beach, hunting & camping in Bar Harbor, Maine, and most of all being with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Kohl) Grove of 46 years; his son, Eric Alan Grove and his girlfriend, Rachael Baum; his daughter , Karalyn Joanna Grove Fallat and her husband, Paul; his beloved grandchildren, Colin and Emerson Fallat; and his dog, Guinnie. All of these people were great sources of pride, happiness and love.
He was a congregant of The Forked River Presbyterian Church, whose members were his church “family”. He served as both elder and deacon and was active in various mission groups.
He was a long-time member of the George Cranmer Deer Club of Warren Grove, and served as treasurer. Al enjoyed an active retirement volunteering at the Toms River Animal Facility, Your Grandmother’s Cupboard and the Lacey Food Bank. He also worked at the Toms River Dog Park.
