Arthur "Art" Lundgren

Arthur "Art" Walter Lundgren, of Berkeley Heights, passed away peacefully with his beloved family by his side on June 2, 2025, at the age of 84.

Arthur was born in Elizabeth, NJ and was raised in Clark, where he attended Johnson Regional High School, served as Class Vice President, and graduated in 1959. He went on to attend Kean University where he graduated with his bachelor's in 1963 and his master's in education in 1967.

Education was at the center of Art's life. He touched the lives of countless teachers and students while serving as Principal for both Roosevelt and Grover Cleveland Elementary Schools in Rahway and was also a student teacher supervisor at the Kean Teaching Performance Center. For many years following his graduation, Art was a proud alumni member of Arthur L. Johnson High School, serving as the ALJ Association President. The Association's mission of providing educational, instructional, and financial support to the students at ALJ was something Art felt passionate about. Among his many contributions to the association was the development of the ALJ Hall of Fame, which honored the accomplishments and successes of fellow alumni.

Above all else, Art's family was the most important thing in his life. While teaching at Roosevelt School, he met the love of his life, Mary Jane Stephanik. They were married in July, 1966, and raised their children, Bonnie and Christopher in Fanwood, where Art served as a town councilman, for 20 years before moving to Berkeley Heights. His greatest joy in life was found in being a father and a grandfather, and he would always ensure that everyone in his family was taken care of.

Art was a member of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad where he served as an EMT for many years. He also served as an Usher at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Art was predeceased by his parents Walter and Isabel (nee Wightman) Lundgren, his sister, Ebba Theiss, nieces Karen Theiss, Lori Theiss, Anna Porter and recently his brother Albert.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane Lundgren; his daughter, Bonnie (Daniel) Gara; his son, Christopher Lundgren; and his granddaughters, Melissa and Allison Gara.

Art will be remembered by his friends and family as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather; a loyal and kind friend; an educator; an avid golfer; and a selfless person.

Family and friends will gather on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 4-8pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood NJ 07023. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 10am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1571 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains. Entombment will follow at Saint Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
