Carl Marinelli – Graduated Newark State College 1963.
Carl was born on July 9, 1937. He graduated from Seton Hall Prep in 1955 and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Navy for a four year term. In his four year term he reached the rate of U.S. Navy Petty Officer second class (an E-5 for those with military experience).
Carl began his college career at Newark State College (now Kean University), Union, NJ, where he majored in Mathematics. In his sophomore year he pledged Sigma Beta Tau fraternity and would serve as a Pledgemaster in his senior year. Carl also served as the President of the Men’s Athletic Association.
He lettered in soccer for 4 years, serving as Captain in his senior year. Carl also lettered for his first 3 years in basketball. Due to a poorly healing broken wrist, he was sidelined during his senior year. However, he then became the coach of Newark State’s JV basketball team. Carl graduated Newark State College in 1963.
His first math teaching position was at Winfield Park, NJ. While there he started the boys soccer team. In his first year, they turned in a winning season.
His second teaching position took him to Raritan High School, in Hazlet, NJ where he again taught Math, and once again he was instrumental in starting the soccer program. Carl planted some good seeds, because a few years after Carl left Raritan, they were crowned with a championship.
In the summer of 1966 Carl would join the corporate world when he became a system analyst with AT&T.
He was so prized by his employer that they sent him to the Wharton School of Business in 1969-70.
From 1971 – 1973 he was part of Gateway in Newark, which was the home office of AT&T. After that Carl was transferred to AT&T Maiden Lane, NYC where he worked with lawyers on the divestiture of the Bell System.
On the personal side, on July 27, 1968 he was married to Carol and they took up residence in Union, NJ. In 1972 they moved to Mountainside, NJ to have a more rural setting to raise their family. Carl & Carol were blessed with their first child Scott in 1971 and their second when Kristen was born in 1976.
Carl was active in town politics and the local Republican Club. He was a member and President of the Mountainside Board of Education. He co-coached the girls soccer program in Mountainside and started the youth T-Ball program.
Carl would continue his education at Seton Hall University, where he earned two Master’s Degrees, one in Mathematics and a second in Business.
His hobbies included golf, racquetball, and fishing from his Boston Whaler
He was employed by AT&T for 25 years becoming a District Manager.
Sadly, Carl died suddenly on March 3, 1991 while playing racquetball. He was 53 years of age.
