Eta 1964 – 1965
John Berardo died on May 1, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (nee Coon) and the loving father of Daniel, Kimberly & Timothy.
John attended what was then Newark State College and is now Kean University. He pledged the Sigma Beta Tau Fraternity in 1964 as part of the Eta Pledge Class. John was a very active brother playing and supporting all activities including carnival and intra-frat sports. John was a four year starter in both baseball and soccer for Newark State and was awarded the D’Angola award recognizing him as an outstanding athlete in his senior year. He was a brother as full of spirit and love of Sigma Beta Tau as any brother of his era. Although he was small in body, he was big in heart, and was the type of guy you wanted next to you in a foxhole. He was as tough as nails yet as kind and gentle as could be. Sigma Beta Tau at its best.
He continued to be an active member of the Sigma Beta Tau Alumni Association in his later years.
Over the years John spent many hours with his fraternity brothers and friends attending pro sports games and challenging them to 18 holes of golf which despite his stature, he most frequently won playing a three wood (right down the middle) which he cherished.. His alumni brothers will greatly miss his humor, spirit and goodwill. He was a prince of a man and loved Sigma Beta Tau.
He graduated college in 1968 and was a prized member of the teaching staff at Honiss School inDumont, NJ for many years, where he taught both Math and Social Studies. He met the love of his life, Pat, a phys ed teacher and fellow sports fan and they married. She tolerated his absolute love of the Yankees, the Giants, and the Rangers.
John was a member of St Therese RC Church in Cresskill, and it was here that his funeral mass was held on May 4, 2015. John was entombed at the Madonna Cemetery, Ft. Lee, NJ.
