He was raised in Madison, New Jersey, and graduated from Newark State College, now known as Kean University in Union, New Jersey in 1964. In 1962 Richard pledged the Sigma Beta Tau fraternity, and was Vice President during his Senior year.
After he graduated college in 1964, Richard joined the U.S. Navy and went directly into the OCS program, where he would earn his officers rating as an Ensign. In 1966 he was promoted to Lieutenant JG, and in Feb. 1968, shortly before he got out, he was promoted to Lieutenant. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, and then served in the Naval Reserve
While on active duty, he had at least one tour of duty in Saigon, and after that he served on the destroyer John W. Thomason, DD-760 with several tours of duty in “WestPac”, where Hong Kong and the Philippines were ports of call.
His final homecoming was delayed because of the infamous “Pueblo” incident. He arrived back in his home port of San Diego a few weeks before getting married in England in May of 1968 to the love of his life, Margaret.
He is survived by his loving family – his wife of 31 years, Margaret Lock of Rockwall, his children Jennifer Lock of Dallas and Jeremy Lock of San Diego, California, his mother Rose Lock, of Toms River, New Jersey and his sisters Loretta Dascoll, of Morris Plains, New Jersey and Fran McDermott, of Whiting, New Jersey – and many dear friends.
For 15 years he had been a much loved employee of Network Multi-Family Security, where at the time of his disability retirement in March, he was VP of Asset Management.
Richard was an avid outdoorsman, with a passion for hunting, boating, and fishing.
He also was a fitness enthusiast. He completed the White Rock Marathon several years ago, and for many years enjoyed the early morning running and companionship at Town North YMCA.
During 21 years of living in Rockwall, he had served on the YMCA Board of Directors, the City of Rockwall Parks Board, and the board of Adjustments, and also was involved in the 1989-90 Strategic Plan for Rockwall Independent School District.
A memorial service was held in the Restland Chapel, Greenville Ave., Rockwall, TX on Tuesday, August 17, 1999.
