Robert D. Smithouser, (May 27, 1934 – December 12, 2017) age 83 of Brick, NJ, a retired school Principal, was born in Jersey City and grew up in Winfield Park, NJ. He spent most of his life in Brick and was predeceased by his mother Katherine and father Edwin Smithouser.
During the Korean War, he served as a flight crewman Petty Officer in Navy Squadron VW-2. His aircraft took part in the rescue of Americans trapped in Egypt during the Sinai War of 1956. Along with other awards, he received the Korean and distinguished service medals.
A career Educator with Toms River Schools, he received his BA, MA and 30+ Professional Certification from Newark State College, now Kean University. He served as a secondary teacher, supervisor of Instruction, and Principal of Pine Beach School from 1972-1984. Mr. Smithouser also taught on the college level at Ocean County College and Kean University as an adjunct professor.
After retirement, he helped his wife, Bery, in the food pantry at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Brick.
An avid trout fisherman, he organized the founding of a trout unlimited chapter in Toms River. He was a lifetime fan of the New York Yankees. His three priorities in life were his family, his students, and his country.
He is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 56 years, Bery, and his two sons of whom he was very proud, Robert and his wife Julie of Colorado Springs, CO, and William and his wife Erin of Jackson, NJ, four very dear grandchildren, the lights of his life, Shelby, Colin, Jack, and Emmett. He is also survived by his brother Edwin T. Smithouser of Brick, and nieces Sally and Susan and their families.
Interment will be private and under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick, NJ 08724. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.colonialfuneralgroup.com
