Iota 1966 – 1967
Thomm Kevin Roberts, 71, of Houston, Texas, husband of the late Linda Roberts, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Houston Hospice.
Born in Belleville, New Jersey, on August 18, 1942, Kevin started a private psychology practice in Houston in 1975.
Kevin was an exceptional and dynamic person whose strength and spirit touched those around him. In 1965, at age 23, Kevin was hit by a car, leading to a bilateral, above-the-knee amputation. He went on to graduate from Kean College, where he was a member of the Sigma Beta Tau fraternity, and to earn a Ph.D. from West Virginia University.
Kevin’s dedication to the practice of psychology and passion for helping others led him to be actively involved in a number of organizations and institutions, including the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences, the Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, the City of Houston Commission on Disabilities, and the University of Houston, where he served as the inaugural director of the Clinical Research and Services Center.
Drawing from his own life experiences, Kevin’s career had a particular focus on the empowerment of people with disabilities and the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Disabled American Veterans honored him in 1981 with a Vietnam Outreach Award for being a pioneer in the field of treating veterans with PTSD.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Kevin was an avid sports fan, a connoisseur of Italian food, and a lover of all things New Jersey. His boisterous laugh and enduring warmth will be missed by all who knew him.
A beloved husband, father, therapist, colleague, teacher, and friend, Kevin will be remembered most for his thoughtful advice and playful sense of humor. He is survived by his daughter Jessica Roberts, of Houston, Texas, and his brother Austin Roberts, of Belleville, New Jersey.
Donations in Kevin’s honor can be made to the Who Says I Can’t Foundation or to the Give an Hour Foundation.
